Solar energy is energy from the sun. The sun constantly radiates masses of solar energy into our solar system and, as one of the planets, our earth with us on it,  gets to experience the sun’s magnificence  and munificence every day  in the form of light and sunshine (heat).

A long time ago people discovered that when direct sunlight was made to shine through a thick shard of glass held at a particular angle, it would concentrate the sun’s rays to such an extent that, if it happened to be  shining on to something flammable like dry leaves, the leaves would catch alight.  How many of us don’t remember as children taking delight in playing with a magnifying glass and experimenting with what would and what would not burn? Much to our parents’ alarm, of course.

Thus from a young age, we could not help but being fascinated by the secret power contained in sunlight. And it is this  energy we harness when solar power is generated.

There are many ways to harness sunlight and put it to good use – as human beings have been doing in one way or another for centuries.  We can use it for heating purposes like the simple act of enjoying sitting in the sun when feeling cold right up to its use to generate electricity after the invention of photovoltaic cells/panels. Photovoltaic literally means light (photo) into electricity (volt). Photovoltaic panels are panels that turn light into electricity.

For us here on this Blog, the application of solar energy that we are particularly interested in is how the sun is harnessed to solar heat our swimming pools, something we discuss in more detail in other blog posts.  The swimming pool solar panels and solar collectors are of particular interest to us in that regard. Click here for more information about solar pool heat and swimming pool solar panels and how they function.
Incidentally, should you decide to purchase something from any of the links on my site, I will be paid a small commission for having promoted the product on my site.

Time to find a new way to heat the pool. I used a copper heat exchanger that I built last year over a campfire and that worked great but the neighbors hated the smoke. This year we use Mr Sun!

I just bought a house, and the previous owner installed a solar heated pool already. However, they didnt leave us with the user guide for the pool, so I dont really know how to operate it. Theres a huge tank on the side of the yard, but the pipe is cut off. I don’t know if there’s anything to do with the solar system.
Please help.
Thanks

Typically your pool and house water systems are separate and this would apply to your solar heating system too.

Most solar pool heaters work off the existing pool pump that diverts some of the water to the solar array then back to the pool return line. They also have a thermo switch that is modifiable in setting. If the pool water temp is 85 and the thermo switch is set at 85 then the valve will not open to the array.

Be careful of this setting since your pool can get too hot and you will expereince high evaporation and chemical use to maintain a hotter pool.

You can also cool your pool down by running your pump at night and circulating the pool water to the solar array which will act as a radiator and cool the pool down. You may have to change the thermo switch to do this.

You’re welcome!!
