Only perhaps if the heater was designed to be covered with plastic, that would probably help increase the heat 30-40% also try a can or two of flat black spray enamel on top of the plastic because the plastic is a little shiny. I haven’t acutally done that will it stay or flake off over time?

Yes, I completed …
Yes, I completed the project and it actually worked great. Water came into the heater at about 70 degrees and left at over 100 degrees when the sun was shining. Even so, it takes a while to warm up 5000 gallons of water. This year I’ll be using a stronger pump to increase flow and possibly adding more hose. I’m not certain how much of an advantage my reflective surface gave it and may just lay some extra coils of tubing out in the sun to see.
